Chicano theatre is a Spanish speaking theater that was started as early as 1598 by Juan de Onate near El Paso, Texas. Two major cities where Chicano theater is very common are Los Angeles and San Francisco where there is a heavy Spanish-speaking minority. This type of theater is often used to show how Hispanics lives were in the United States and what obstacles they have had to overcome in order to accommodate themselves in this country. Chicano theater is a good representation of cultural adaptation. It often uses both Spanish and English, often called Spanglish. The Cuban Revolution was one of the reasons Cuban theater started. This was a way Cubans expressed the way they felt about their government. Chicano Theater often contains history, metaphors and religious references.
